Hunk of the Week, Matthew Mitcham

I told you there was more on Matthew soon, and here he is, in all his glory. The 20 year old gold medallist diver comes to us from Brisbane, Australia, though he now lives and trains in Sydney. According to his website, Matthew started out as a trampoline gymnast before being spotted and throwing himself (see what I did there?) into diving. Thank goodness he did, trampolinists generally wear a little more than divers. A piece of trivia poached directly from his site -- Mitcham had his tongue pierced at the age of 14, and still has it.

All that, and a gold medallist. It's no wonder his partner Lachlan has a perma-smile on his face.

The 2008 Summer Olympic Games drew to a close today, with a spectacular closing ceremony in Beijing. I'm sure you've all seen the pictures of the pretty fireworks, so I thought I'd share some pictures of the hunkiest Olympians of 2008, in tribute to the 29th Olympiad.

I'm already looking forward to 2012...

Out, Proud, and Golden!

You don't have to be the world's biggest sports fan to have heard about Matthew Mitcham's shock gold medal win in Beijing today. The 20 year old diver from Sydney produced the highest scoring dive in Olympic history, beating favourite to win, Zhou Luxin, by almost 5 points and becoming the first Australian male gold medallist in diving since Dick Eve in 1924.

Mitcham generated a fair bit of media attention in May this year when he came out to the Sydney Morning Herald, becoming one of the first Australian athletes to do so, and astonishingly, he's the only openly gay athlete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, compared to Athens in 2004, where 11 of the competing athletes were openly gay.

Hardly surprisingly, he got rather emotional after his near perfect dive. Well done Matthew!

When it comes to our bodies, there's one thing every man wants. No, I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the six pack. There are no end of websites out there that promise to give you the six pack of your dreams, in return for a "small" recurring fee. Minimum 3 month contract applies. But the best advice out there, as with everything in life, is free. Here's a great routine that I found on youtube, and has worked wonders for me. Clearly it works for him, too.

SixPackNow is a handy little resource, too. You don't have to register if you don't want to, but they have some great little hints and tips in their preview sections. And if you need any more encouragement, here's Anton Antipov, undisputed King of the Abs, to show us what can be achieved. Or if we're feeling lazy, he's rather nice to look at.

Hunk of the Week, Edilson

Ok, ok. I realise it's been all about the boy recently, but how could I not share this month's boy from Terra with you, Edilson Nascimento. Now 22, Edilson has already been around for a while. He was spotted by photographer Elian Gallardo at the tender age of 16 while competing in a Judo championship in Brazil. Although he was born in João Pessoa, he went on to become Mr. Pernambuco 2007 and a finalist in Mr. Brazil. And it's easy to see why.

Shelter (2007)

Charged with the electric crackle of first love, this sweet and sexy California romance is about a confused young artist torn between his family and his future. Fresh out of high school, Zach (Trevor Wright) gives up a full scholarship to spare his 5-year-old nephew from their dysfunctional family. Now restless and isolated, the gifted youth toils at a local diner.

But everything changes when he finds himself drawn to thirtysomething Shaun (Brad Rowe), a confident young writer. As the two hit the surf and Shaun's mattress with equal enthusiasm, they fall into a secret relationship that may give Zach the courage he needs to follow his passions.

Shelter is that rarest of things -- a gay themed movie that doesn't end in tragedy. While it shows us that life can indeed be tough, it also gives us hope. It's beautifully shot, and of course, the eye candy is superb.

I'm usually a bugger for giving spoilers, but this time I'm not going to. All I need to say is that nobody's on drugs. There's not a rent boy or a gun in sight. Nobody's beaten to within an inch of their life. This is simply a superb, sweet love story. And Zach and Sean make a gorgeous couple. Don't you agree?
